Have you ever looked around at the world — the shows we watch, the music we listen to, the things people celebrate — and felt something inside you say, “This isn’t right… something is off”? Have you ever felt disturbed by the spiritual climate around you?
If so, you’re not crazy. You’re not judgmental. You’re not “too spiritual.” You’re experiencing what Paul felt in Acts 17.
Paul walked into Athens — a beautiful, educated, artistic city. But beneath the beauty, he saw something that broke his heart. The Bible says “his spirit was provoked within him” when he saw the city full of idols.
Paul wasn’t angry at people — he was disturbed by the darkness.
He wasn’t irritated — he was spiritually awakened.
He wasn’t offended — he was burdened.
Paul saw idols everywhere — statues, temples, altars — and something inside him said, “This is not what God wants for His people.”
And here’s the truth: We live in a modern Athens.
Our idols may not be carved statues, but they are everywhere.
Idols in entertainment. Idols in celebrity culture. Idols in social media. Idols in relationships. Idols in money, fame, pleasure, and self‑worship.
We see worldliness celebrated. We see sin normalized. We see darkness packaged as entertainment. We see spiritual compromise disguised as “freedom.”
And like Paul, something inside us should feel disturbed.
Not hateful. Not judgmental. Not self‑righteous.
But disturbed — in a holy way.
Disturbed enough to pray. Disturbed enough to guard our hearts. Disturbed enough to protect our families. Disturbed enough to say, “Lord, open our eyes. Wake us up. Keep us from idols.”
Because here’s the truth: Whatever captures your attention eventually captures your heart. Whatever you tolerate eventually influences your spirit. Whatever you entertain eventually shapes your walk with God.
Paul didn’t ignore the idols. He confronted them with truth. He preached Jesus boldly. He stood for righteousness in a culture drowning in worldliness.
And God used him powerfully.
Today, God is calling us to do the same — to be spiritually awake, spiritually sensitive, spiritually aware.
Not fearful. Not angry. Not judgmental.
But disturbed enough to stay close to Jesus.
Disturbed enough to say, “I refuse to bow to the idols of this world. My heart belongs to God alone.”

“Lord, awaken my spirit. Help me see what You see. I refuse to bow to the idols of this world. My heart belongs to You alone.”

Father, thank You for giving me a sensitive spirit like Paul. When I see worldliness, idols, and spiritual distractions around me, help me stay awake and aware. Protect my heart, my mind, my home, and my walk with You. Remove anything that competes for my attention or affection. Keep me close to You and far from anything that pulls me away. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
